How to Build a Truss

Basic steps for building a small truss, and when to buy engineered ones instead.

Building a simple truss

For a shed, porch or playhouse you can build a basic king post truss on a flat jig.

  1. Calculate lengths using the king post truss calculator.
  2. Build a jig on flat ground so every truss matches.
  3. Cut two top chords, one bottom chord and the web member with accurate angles.
  4. Fasten each joint with construction adhesive and gusset plates or nail plates on both faces.
  5. Make a test truss, lift it and check fit before you cut the rest.
  6. Brace trusses as you stand them up, then install permanent bracing.
For any house or occupied building use engineered, stamped trusses. Home-built trusses are only for small, non-habitable structures where code allows.

Read truss design principles and the dimensions guide first.
