How it works

How to use the roof truss calculator

  1. Enter span and length. Span is the wall-to-wall width; length runs along the ridge.
  2. Choose a pitch. From a low 2/12 to a steep 12/12, or enter an exact angle.
  3. Set spacing and loads. Pick on-center spacing and local snow and wind values.
  4. Read the results. Everything updates live as you type.
Outputs

What the calculator works out

  • Rafter (top chord) length with and without overhang
  • Rise, run and overall roof height
  • Roof angle and roof surface area
  • Truss quantity from on-center spacing
  • Estimated board feet and material cost
  • Dead load, live load and total roof weight

How to calculate rafter length and truss count

Rafter length is the true sloped distance from the ridge to the eave tail. Run is half the span; rise is run multiplied by pitch ÷ 12. Then use the Pythagorean theorem and add the overhang.

rafter = (run + overhang) ÷ cos(angle)

Example: a 30 ft span, 6/12 pitch and 12 in overhang has a 15 ft run, 7.5 ft rise and a rafter of about 17.9 ft with the overhang.

Truss count comes from building length and spacing:

count = ceil(length × 12 ÷ spacing) + 1

A 40 ft building needs 21 trusses at 24 in and 31 at 16 in. Price them with the cost calculator or check quantities with the truss count guide.

What is on-center spacing?

On-center (O.C.) spacing is measured from the center of one truss to the center of the next. Common values are 12, 16, 19.2 and 24 inches. Tighter spacing means more trusses and less load on each; 24 in is standard for engineered trusses. Compare in truss vs rafter.

Formulas

The math behind the calculator

Pitch angle

θ = arctan(rise ÷ run)

Angle between rafter and horizontal.

Rise

rise = run × pitch ÷ 12

Vertical gain from plate to ridge.

Rafter length

L = √(run² + rise²)

True sloped length.

Roof area

A = length × span ÷ cos(θ)

Footprint corrected for slope.

Truss count

N = ceil(L×12 ÷ s) + 1

Based on on-center spacing.

Total load

W = (DL + LL) × A

Dead plus live (or snow) over roof area.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate roof truss size?

Measure the wall-to-wall span, choose a pitch, then enter span, pitch, spacing and loads. The calculator returns rafter length, rise, count and cost. Final member sizes need an engineer.

What size truss do I need for a 20 ft span?

Many 20 ft spans use engineered trusses with 2x4 chords at 24 in spacing, but snow and wind loads can change that. Always confirm with a stamped design.

How many trusses do I need?

Divide the building length in inches by the spacing, round up and add one. A 40 ft building at 24 in spacing needs 21.

Do trusses have to be evenly spaced?

In standard designs yes, so sheathing, ceilings and loads line up. Irregular spacing needs custom engineering.

Is this calculator accurate enough to build from?

It is built for preliminary estimates. Permits and construction need a design stamped by a licensed engineer.

Does it work in metric?

Yes. Use the Feet/Meters toggle, or pick units per field.
